Do you know what the Indigenous seasons are for the area you live?⁠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁠
The four seasons brought to Australia by colonisation don’t really suit the environment here. If you live in Perth you’d know we really don’t have four seasons at all.⁠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁠
Here, on Noongar Boodja (country) we have six seasons:⁠
✧ Jan – Feb: Birak, dry and hot⁠
✧ Feb – Mar: Bunuru, hottest time⁠
✧ Apr – May: Djeran, cooler weather begins⁠
✧ Jun – Jul : Makuru, coldest and wettest time⁠
✧ Aug – Sept: Djilba, warmer days and colder nights⁠
✧ Oct – Nov: Kamberang, longer dry periods⁠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁠
If you’ve been following me for a while you’ll know the importance of eating with the seasons 🌞 Food that is in season doesn’t have to travel so far, it’s cheaper, it’s easier to grow sustainably and it’s more nutritious! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁠ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A work colleague told me they were having a ‘Djilba Dinner Party’ soon where they would only cook with foods that are in season and would use as many native foods as they could. I love this idea!⁠

We moved into our new rental whilst COVID-19 lockdowns begun. We were working from home and things were slow. I learnt how to make a sourdough starter from scratch and how to bake a loaf from @renatebakes @zerowastechef and @fullproofbaking.⁠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠
I joined our local Buy Nothing Facebook group when we moved and I can’t tell you enough how much I love this group. I posted on it asking if anyone could help me hem a few pairs of work pants that I couldn’t do myself. A lady offered to help me for free. I ended up baking her an olive sourdough loaf in exchange and she was thrilled.⁠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠
I haven’t baked bread in a while as the pace of life has quickened again. But when I think back to this story, I smile and feel warm inside. Community makes everything so much better, not to mention easier.⁠

This is how I feel after switching my whole website to a sustainable hosting platform!⁠ 🎉

The internet industry consumes enormous amounts of energy. The backbone of the internet are data centers which hold millions of large servers, stacked on top of each other in racks and they are powered up and running all day every day. These servers consume enormous of energy and to make sure that they do not over heat and fail, they are blasted with arctic temperature air all day every day.⁠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠
In fact 40% of all of the energy used to power the internet is used to keep those servers from overheating.⁠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠
Today there are over 8 million data centers worldwide, accounting for 2% of the world’s carbon emissions, that is as much as the AIRLINE INDUSTRY!⁠ 🤯

I just made the switch to @GoGreenGeeks, a sustainable web hosting platform. For all the energy my website uses, 3 x that will be created by renewable energy sources ✨ Not only is my site carbon neutral but it’s carbon negative baby!⁠

I have been working for over a year now updating my site, including a bunch of new blog posts and doing some exciting collaborations. Eventually, I’ll get to the mammoth task of updating all my old blog posts. It’s a slow process but I’ll get there in the end!
