    Organic Food – What you already know, don’t know and should know

    Chemicals Conventional farming systems rely heavily on chemical additives. Alternatively, organic farming avoids the use of man-made fertilisers, pesticides, growth regulators and livestock feed additives. Even low-level exposure to toxic pesticides and fertilizers can damage human health. E.g. Organophosphorus and Atrazine used in pesticides have been connected to a number of developmental problems, including autism, ADHD and impaired cognitive abilities in children (Organic Facts, 2015; Rodale, 2011). As for animal products, when animals eat chemical laden food the chemical concentration increases (bio-accumulates) and then we eat it and get a concentrated dose along with antibiotics.     Food Miles

    Food miles refer to how far food has traveled to get to your plate and the carbon dioxide emitted in this travel. The average Australian shopping basket has traveled a distance of 70,000km – equal to 2x the Earth’s circumference! The easiest way to reduce your food miles is by buying food that is unprocessed, local and in season. If you buy food that is out of season, chances are it has traveled a long way to get to you.     How much water is needed to produce your food?

    How many litres of water does it take to produce 1kg of common food items? Chocolate – 24,000 Beef – 15,500 Cheese – 5,000 Pork – 4,800 Olives – 4,400 Chicken – 3,900 Rice – 3,400 Nuts – 3,100 Dates – 3,000 Sugar – 1,600 Wheat – bread 1,300 Corn – 900 Bananas – 860 Apples – 700 Cabbage – 200 Lettuce -130 Luckily for me, I don’t eat meat, cheese or sugar so I don’t have to feel bad about that.
